Let's find out more about the NRL
What Is The NRL?
The NRL, or National Rugby League Premiership, is the top-level league competition in Australasia. The NRL consists of 16 clubs, including the Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm, Cantebury Bulldog, St. George Illawarra Dragons, North Queensland Cowboys, Gold Coast Titans, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Newcastle Knight, Cronulla Shark, Parramatta Eels, Canberra Raiders, Balmain Wests Tigers, Manly Sea Eagles, Penrith Panthers, New Zealand Warrior and the Brisbane Broncos (and 1 team from New Zealand). Each club plays each other twice in a season however each season the total number of games each club needs to play will vary from 20 - 26 games. For example, in the 2021 season, there were 24 total games played per team.
Rugby league has been played in Australia since 1908. The NRL was formed in 1998 as a result of the merger between the Australian Rugby League and the Super League competitions. It is currently one of the most popular sports codes in Australia, with the top 8 teams qualifying for the finals series.
How the game of NRL has evolved over the years
The game of rugby league has evolved a great deal since it was first played in Australia back in 1908. Rugby League has been around for more than 100 years, but changes are still being made as the sport continues to grow both on and off the field. The team names, jerseys and logos have all been revised over the years as well. In fact, there are several versions of the game from around the world that can be seen in the NRL today.
What Is The State of Origin Series?
The State of Origin series is a three-game match series between two Australian state representative teams, the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. The first Origin match was held in 1908, with the inaugural series won by NSW 43-0 victory. The second match was held in 1910, and NSW won by 22 points to nil. The third match was played in 1912 and NSW again won, this time by one point to nil. The annual series continued until 1922 when Queensland defeated NSW 26-18 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The State of Origin series is one of the most popular events in Australian sport, with television audiences regularly exceeding those for any other domestic sporting event.
Overall between 1908-1981 the current state of origin series record is NSW with 159 wins, 54 losses and 8 Draws. From 1982 until 2022 the series records are Queensland with 67 wins, 57 losses and 2 draws.
